Helena’s Story

“Can you do me?” I asked my best friend, Ashley, handing her the bottle of tanning lotion.

“Oh, I’d love to do you,” she giggled.

“I meant my back,” I said, rolling over onto my stomach.

We’d decided to spend the day by the pool getting tans. It was the first week of summer break. In three short months she’d be going off to the state university while I stayed behind to attend community college. That was my punishment for not graduating with honors. Gary, my stepfather, could have easily paid my tuition to any college of my choice, but he’d refused.

“Do a year at community and prove to me you can keep up your grades. Then we’ll talk, A college education is expensive. I don’t want to throw my money away only to have you flunk out by mid-semester,” he’d said.

All my friends thought he was so cool, good looking, too, for an older guy. They should try living with him. He was always hard on me. I used to joke that he expected far more of me than my tiny blond brain could deliver.

“That’s your problem, Helena. You need more self-confidence,” he’d tell me. “You’re a beautiful young woman, but you could be so much more than that.”

At least he thought I was beautiful and I liked that he saw me as a young woman, I was nineteen, after all. He was right about me being too preoccupied with my looks, too, but there was a reason. I’d done some local modeling for clothing stores around town and I really thought I could make it as a lingerie model. I had curves in all the right places. Right now my tits were nearly spilling out of my swim top.

“She lives in a fantasy world,” my mother would say to Gary whenever I talked about my dreams of becoming a famous model. “She needs a dose of reality. See if you can get through to her. She never listens to a word I say.”

Of course I didn’t listen to my mother. She rarely said anything I wanted to hear. After she’d divorced my birth father she’d married Gary before the ink on the divorce papers had dried. Or maybe I should say she married his money. That was closer to the truth and he’d eventually figured it out. The two of them didn’t spend any more time with each other than they were forced to these days, but he’d been the only father figure I’d had for the last ten years, so he still paid plenty of attention to me. Sometimes I wished he’d give up on me. His expectations were too high. He was always encouraging me to use my brain, but I’d learned from watching my mother that a woman got further faster by using her body.

The lotion felt cool as Ashley massaged it into my back. I closed my eyes. The Texas sun was bright even looking through my sunglasses. It was scorching, too. If I dozed off, I’d wake up with a hell of a burn.
